How does the claims process work?

Here's a closer look at how to file and track an auto claim.

Step 1: File your claim.

Once you submit a claim, you'll get a claim number so you can track it.

Step 2: Investigate damages.

A professional may need to take a closer look at the event to assess damages, determine what needs to be repaired/replaced and provide you with an estimate.

Step 3: Review estimate.

Once you've received an estimate, your claims adjuster will discuss your settlement based on your policy provisions, terms and coverage.

Step 4: Repair your ride.

After getting an inspection and estimate of damages, you can start repairing your car.

Step 5: Settle your claim.

Depending on your circumstance, Allstate may pay the repair shop directly, issue your payment at the time of inspection, or send it after the estimate has been submitted and approved.

Total loss vehicles

If the cost to repair your car is greater than its cash value, it's considered a total loss vehicle1. In this case, Allstate will pay up to the actual cash value of your car minus your deductible.

Receiving your settlement check

Depending on your situation, your payment may be:

  • Sent directly to the repair shop
  • Transferred using Fast Mobile e-Payment
  • Given to you at the time of inspection
  • Mailed to you after the estimate has been submitted and approved
  • Made out to the lien holder or finance company if you have a car loan
  • Made jointly payable to your and your repair facility
