Before you file
Should I file a claim?
Your policy requires you to let us know if you have an incident. If you choose not to file a claim, there’s a risk that you could lose coverage for damage or injuries discovered later. And filing protects you from possible future lawsuits as well.
Is there anything I need to know before I file?
There are a few points to keep in mind:
- If you file a claim, you’ll be responsible for paying your deductible before your insurance kicks in. Get deductible information specific to your policy at My Account.
- Allstate will try to recover your deductible from the other driver’s insurance if you’re not at fault for the accident.
- Your policy requires you to notify Allstate if you’re in an accident with another driver. You have the option to file through the other driver’s insurance as well.
- Your premium, or the amount you pay for your policy, may increase after the accident. If your policy includes accident forgiveness your rates won’t be affected even if you’re found to be at fault.
What information do I need to file an auto insurance claim?

- Contact information for anyone involved in the accident
- Vehicle information and insurance information for each vehicle involved
- Photos of vehicle damage
- Location and time of day of the accident
- A copy of the police report

FAQs
If a repair shop finds additional covered damage, Allstate will be contacted to approve additional expenses and have payment sent directly to your repair shop.
If repair costs are more than the current value of your car, then we consider the vehicle as a “total loss”. Allstate will pay you the cash value of your car, minus your deductible.
Check your Allstate policy for rental reimbursement coverage details (sometimes called transportation expense coverage). Most rental coverages have a limit of 30 days.
Your insurance premium may increase for a few reasons, including:
- External factors, like government regulations or an overall rise in medical or repair costs for claims.
- Your prior claims, the type of claims you’ve made and how long you’ve been with Allstate.
- The coverages, limits and deductibles you choose when you purchase or renew a policy.
Allstate offers several ways to help manage your insurance costs, including features like auto accident forgiveness and multiple policy discounts.
Review your coverages regularly to make sure they meet your needs and get help from an Allstate representative if you have any questions.
It’s possible, but we will do our best to recover the amount paid from the person responsible, including your deductible.
You can file on your own policy or go through the other driver’s. No matter who’s at fault, you’ll want to get the other driver’s insurance information, and then contact us about the accident. Allstate can try to recover costs from the other driver’s insurance company if our investigation finds them to be at fault.
It depends on the laws in your state. Some states have shared fault, while others do not. Your assigned adjuster considers several factors including the drivers and witness statements to determine fault.
You can find all your policy info after logging in to My Account. From there, you can review your coverages, policy limits and your deductible amount.
A limit is the maximum amount your policy will pay toward a covered claim. Each coverage in your insurance policy has a limit. The limit is the amount of coverage you have.
Based on your policy, a deductible is the out-of-pocket cost you’ll pay if you choose to get repairs done. This is subtracted from the amount Allstate pays for a covered claim.
Every type of claim is different and numerous factors affect how long it takes to get one resolved. Provide us with all the necessary information to help your claim process go more smoothly. An Allstate representative will provide a rough timeline for when it should be resolved.
