Colorado Wildfire Risk Score
Individual property-level and community-level mitigation discounts are not available for Allstate North American Insurance Company. Instead, Wildfire Risk Scores are used to assess wildfire risk. Qualifying mitigation actions may help improve a wildfire risk assessment, which may result in a premium benefit.
What affects a Wildfire Risk Score?
The factors that influence a Wildfire Risk Score depend on the property and surrounding area. Examples may include:
- Overhanging vegetation density: Vegetation directly above or touching your home; this can increase the chance that embers or flames reach your structure.
- Surrounding vegetation density: Vegetation within 30 feet of your home; dense vegetation can fuel a fire and increase the likelihood of damage.
- Neighboring vegetation density: Vegetation between 30 and 100 feet from your home, including nearby properties; heavy vegetation can allow fire to spread closer to your structure.
- Roof material: The type of roof on your home; fire-resistant materials can help reduce the chance of ignition.
- Surrounding building density: Nearby buildings and structures; closely spaced structures can increase risk if fire spreads from one building to another.
- Fuel type: The type of vegetation in your area; some vegetation ignites and spreads fire more easily than others.
- Distance to nearest fire station: How close your property is to a fire station; properties farther away may experience longer emergency response times.
- Wildfire suppression difficulty: How easy or difficult it is for firefighters to respond, based on terrain, access, and infrastructure; hard-to reach areas may face higher risk.
- Distance to high suppression difficulty areas: Proximity to areas where firefighting is more challenging; being closer to these areas can increase overall exposure.
What can help reduce wildfire risk?
Property-level or community-level mitigation may improve wildfire resilience which may contribute to a more favorable Wildfire Risk Score and result in a premium reduction. Qualifying mitigation actions may include measures such as:
- Creating and maintaining defensible space around the home
- Removing vegetation that touches or overhangs the structure
- Using fire-resistant roofing and other building materials
- Completing a verified wildfire mitigation or certification program
- Participating in qualifying community or neighborhood mitigation efforts
Important: Completing mitigation efforts does not guarantee a score change or premium reduction. Contact your Allstate representative if you have questions about documentation or qualifying actions.
