REAL ID: What you need to know

There are several forms of identification that meet the standards set out by the REAL ID Act such as passports, passport cards, and any other form of ID that meets the minimum standard set by the REAL ID Act. One of the most common forms is a state issued driver’s license with a visual indication that it is REAL ID compliant, usually by a star.

Drivers licenses and identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant will say “Federal Limits Apply” on them according to the Illinois State Department.

You may apply for a REAL ID compliant driver’s license, which has the benefits that REAL ID ensures. This allows you to use your REAL ID license to access locations and services where it is required.

Requirements for obtaining a REAL ID vary based on a few factors but it is primarily governed by the type of identification you’re pursuing. All 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia (D.C.) and the five U.S. territories are all issuing REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses and IDs, confirms the DHS.

Step 1: Check your state’s REAL ID requirements

If you’re pursuing a state issued form of REAL ID, the first step of the process is to find your state’s requirements. Typically, you can check your local DMV’s website for what is needed, which you can found using this page on USA.gov.

Step 2: Gather the required documents

You will need to gather all your required documents. This may include:

• Proof of identity
• Proof of social security number
• Documentation proving your residency

The required documents will vary depending on your state’s rules explains the DHS. Refer to your state’s DMV website for your specific requirements

Step 3: Visit your local DMV or licensing office

Once you have your documentation in order you will need to take it in person to your local DMV or licensing office. Your documentation may include a form that you must fill out prior to visiting your DMV or licensing facility.

Step 4: Receive your REAL ID

You may have to wait for your application to be processed. If you’re getting a REAL ID compliant driver’s license you will receive a temporary license, similar to when you get a standard driver’s license.

As of May 7, 2025, REAL IDs are required for U.S. travelers boarding domestic flights and individuals accessing secure federal facilities or nuclear power plants explains the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

For international travel, you’ll still need a passport to leave and re-enter the country.

If you meet one or more of these use cases, you will need to obtain a valid form of REAL ID. If you don’t need to access secure federal buildings or fly on airplanes, you may not a REAL ID.

REAL ID is a federal standard for identification. Many activities at the local level do not require REAL ID. You don’t need one to drive, vote, or enter state or local governmental buildings. Activities such as purchasing alcohol, renting a car, or age verification will still be possible with standard identification (non-REAL ID).

May 7, 2025 is the starting date for REAL ID enforcement in the U.S., according to the DHS. REAL ID compliant identification is already required to board domestic flights and the other use cases detailed previously.
