Does Pet Insurance Cover Emergencies?

Published: January 2018

Many pet insurance plans help cover emergency treatment. Pet health insurance is designed to help pet owners with the costs of unexpected veterinary bills. According to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA), pet health insurance typically helps cover treatment for:

  • Accidental injury
  • Illness
  • Accidental poisoning

Coverage will vary among insurers and policies, so it's a good idea to read your policy to understand what is (and is not) covered before an emergency arises.

Does Pet Insurance Cover Surgery?

Pet insurance may help cover surgery if it's the result of a covered accident or illness. For example, emergency surgery to repair a broken bone may be covered.

Some policies also include treatment for illnesses such as cancer. So if your pet needs to have a tumor removed, some of the costs of the related surgery may be covered.

It's important to note, however, that costs related to pre-existing conditions typically are not covered, according to NAPHIA.

How Much of My Vet Bills Will Pet Insurance Cover?

The dollar amount or percentage of a veterinary bill that will be covered depends on your specific pet insurance plan. Typically, you will pay for the vet bill up front, and the insurance provider will reimburse you for a percentage of the covered expenses, as outlined in your policy.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) states that coverage may have a deductible, which is the amount you pay out of pocket before coverage kicks in. In addition, your coverage will come with policy caps or limits (the maximum amount your policy will pay for a covered claim).

The III notes that policy benefits may also depend on the type of coverage you have. Basic coverage typically provides reimbursement for accidental injuries and illnesses. Comprehensive coverage, on the other hand, may provide broader benefits, such as prescription medication and diagnostic testing.

While you'll likely pay higher premiums for comprehensive coverage, these policies typically have lower deductibles and help cover a higher percent of vet bills.

Pet insurance coverage may help with the unexpected costs of nursing your furry family member back to health. If you're interested in helping protect your pet, an insurance agent can help you choose the pet insurance coverage that meets your family's needs.
