Does Event Insurance Cover a Honeymoon?

Published: March 2016

A honeymoon can be a very special time. It's a chance for you to celebrate your new marriage, relax after the stress and excitement of the wedding and enjoy a vacation with your new husband or wife.

But what happens if you unexpectedly need to cancel or postpone your wedding as well as your honeymoon? If you purchase special event cancellation insurance to help cover your wedding, the policy may help protect you in some — but not all — situations in which you need to reschedule or cancel your honeymoon.

How May a Honeymoon Be Covered?

Event cancellation insurance may help cover costs associated with postponing or canceling a planned event, such as a wedding or reception.

You may find that you need to call off your big day due to severe weather (if it prevents the bride, groom, families or guests from attending the wedding), injury or illness to the bride, groom or their immediate family, or the sudden withdrawal of military leave (if the bride or groom is on active military service). In these kinds of scenarios, event insurance may help cover certain expenses, such as non-refundable deposits.

And if a risk covered by your policy affects both your wedding and your honeymoon, event cancellation coverage may help pay the costs of changing your honeymoon plans.

For example, you might intend to leave for your honeymoon right after your reception. If the groom falls ill before the wedding, you might suddenly need to delay both the wedding and the honeymoon. Special event insurance may help pay the non-refundable costs of changing your honeymoon plans, such as the cost of hotel accommodations, booking fees, or airline change fees.

What May Not Be Covered?

If you need to postpone or cancel your honeymoon but not your wedding or reception, changing your honeymoon plans likely won't be covered by special event insurance. So, if you hold your wedding and reception, but the bride or groom becomes ill immediately afterward and can't travel, the costs of rescheduling your honeymoon likely wouldn't be covered by special event insurance.

Special event insurance likely will not protect you from issues that arise while you're on your honeymoon. For example, event cancellation coverage probably won't cover costs associated with theft of your baggage or medical bills if you require treatment during your honeymoon.

Also, special event insurance may only cover cancellations or postponements for reasons that are out of your control of both of the people getting married. For example, if the bride or groom has a change of heart and decides not to go through with the wedding, special event insurance likely wouldn't cover the costs of canceling the honeymoon — or the wedding.

Other Things to Consider

You may need to purchase special event insurance within a certain period of time before the wedding. Read your policy carefully or check with your agent to learn of any requirements as well as what aspects of your honeymoon may or may not be covered by event insurance.

When you're planning a honeymoon, you already have plenty to think about. Event cancellation insurance may help give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have some protection in place, just in case things don't go as planned.
