Other structures
Protects the physical structure of buildings on your property separate from your home, such as a detached garage

Wildfire Risk

In Colorado, we consider wildfire risk as part of how we evaluate and price home insurance. Property specific mitigation actions and community-level mitigation activities influence wildfire risk scores and impact premiums.   While discounts aren’t currently offered for property or community level mitigation actions, taking the following mitigation steps may protect your home, improve your score, and could help lower your premium by up to 2%.

Property Specific Mitigation Action means a science-based mitigation action as demonstrated by the “Wildfire Prepared Home” designation from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety or by a similar mitigation program that includes a verification and certification process. These mitigation actions may include measures such as:

  • Overhanging Vegetation Density: Vegetation directly above or touching your home; this can increase the chance that embers or flames reach your structure.
  • Surrounding Vegetation Density: Vegetation within 30 feet of your home; dense vegetation can fuel a fire and increase the likelihood of damage.
  • Neighboring Vegetation Density: Vegetation between 30 and 100 feet from your home, including nearby properties; heavy vegetation can allow fire to spread closer to your structure.
  • Roof Material: The type of roof on your home; fire-resistant materials can help reduce the chance of ignition.
  • Surrounding Building Density: Nearby buildings and structures; closely spaced structures can increase risk if fire spreads from one building to another.

Community level mitigation means a science-based mitigation action as demonstrated by a community or neighborhood level designation or certification or as undertaken by a government entity. These mitigation actions may include measures such as:

  • Fuel Type: The type of vegetation in your area; some vegetation ignites and spreads fire more easily than others.
  • Distance to Nearest Fire Station: How close your property is to a fire station; properties farther away may experience longer emergency response times.
  • Wildfire Suppression Difficulty: How easy or difficult it is for firefighters to respond, based on terrain, access, and infrastructure; hard-to‑reach areas may face higher risk
  • Distance to High Suppression Difficulty Areas: Proximity to areas where firefighting is more challenging; being closer to these areas can increase overall exposure.
