What Is Motorhome Insurance And What Does It Cover?

Updated: April 2018

Motorhome insurance typically includes multiple coverages designed to help protect you and help pay for repairs to your motorhome and its contents in certain situations. If you own a motorhome or if you're thinking about buying one, here some things to consider about insurance.

You may find some of the same coverages offered by auto insurance are available for motorhomes. A typical motorhome insurance policy may include the following coverage options.

Collision coverage
This protection may help pay for the cost of repairing or replacing your motorhome if it's damaged in an accident with another vehicle or object. Collision coverage may extend to the physical structure of the motorhome as well as built-in features inside, like sinks or a permanently installed television.

Comprehensive coverage
Damage can also be caused by something other than a collision. Comprehensive coverage may help cover the cost of repairing a motorhome if it's damaged by hail or fire, for example. In some cases, comprehensive coverage may also help cover water damage to your motorhome or items that are permanently built into it. Read your policy or contact your agent to learn what types of water damage your policy covers.

Liability coverage
Suppose you are found at fault for an accident that injures another person or their property. Liability coverage may help pay for the injured person's medical bills or help cover the costs of repairing their property.

Contents coverage
You may find that motorhome insurance offers limited coverage for personal belongings you've brought with you on the road. Check your policy to learn about any contents coverage it may provide. If you have homeowners or renters insurance, the personal property coverage on that policy may help cover your belongings while they're in your motorhome.

Medical payments coverage
This protection helps cover medical expenses or funeral expenses that you or your passengers incur as the result of an accident.

Personal injury protection
This type of protection, available only if you live in a no-fault state, may help cover expenses such as medical bills, lost wages and funeral expenses that result from an accident with your motorhome.

It's important to keep in mind that each type of coverage typically comes with a limit — the maximum amount the policy will pay out for a covered loss. You'll likely need to pay a deductible before your coverage will take effect.

Some insurers may offer additional protections, such as roadside assistance, coverage for a sound system installed by your motorhome's manufacturer or coverage for emergency travel expenses if damage to your motorhome leaves it unusable. Be sure to read your policy or contact your agent to determine what types of coverage are available to you and whether you have enough to fit your needs.

Most states require motorhome owners to have a minimum limit of liability coverage. But, in some cases, you may find that you're required to carry other types of coverage. For instance:

  • Financing a motorhome
If you're financing your motorhome through a lender, your lender may require you to carry comprehensive and collision coverage on the vehicle until it is paid off.
  • Renting a motorhome
While your home or auto insurance may provide limited protection for a motorhome that you rent rather than own, a temporary policy through the rental company may help cover you in additional scenarios.
Be sure to read your policy or contact your local agent so that you know what your policy covers — and so that you can ensure you are meeting any requirements that may be in place — before you begin cruising the open road in your motorhome.
