Drivewise FAQs

Drivewise is a program from Allstate that measures your safe driving behaviors and rewards you for them. The safer you drive, the more you can earn.

The Performance cash rewards are calculated each term with 12 months of rolling data (six months on the first policy renewal) based on:

  • Safe speed (under 80 mph)
  • Braking (minimal abrupt stops)
  • Time of day driven (limited late-night trips)

Phone activity is a Drivewise feature available in Allstate Mobile that helps you drive safer by providing insight into how often and when you use your phone while behind the wheel. These insights aren't currently used to calculate your performance rewards but are used to provide awareness into unsafe driving behaviors and encourage safer driving habits.

The Allstate® mobile app automatically detects a trip is occurring when:

  • The phone is on with location services enabled and adequately charged—at least 5% battery power
    • iOS: Allow Motion & Fitness and set Location to Always
    • Android: Allow Physical Activity, set Location to Always and turn off Power savings mode
  • A vehicle travels at least 15 mph for at least 1 minute

No action is necessary on your part to capture a trip. Even if the app is closed in the background, it will detect trips.

The Allstate® mobile app uses similar battery levels as other navigational apps. Like those other apps, Allstate recommends you plug your phone in to charge while driving. There are a lot of things that may affect battery performance of a phone, including:

  • Phone age and design
  • Drive route and mobile-tower signal strength variations
  • Battery health

With the latest technology, Drivewise can recognize if you're a driver, a passenger, or if you're using some other type of transportation like a train. The trip type will show on the top corner of each trip card. Shortly after a trip ends, the app labels the trip type. If the app ever gets it wrong—maybe you were on the bus and it identified you as the driver—you can easily edit the trip type. Just click on the trip label and select the correct option from the list. If you weren't the driver then the trip won't affect your driving wellness or potential savings.

The Allstate® mobile app is designed to use the least amount of data possible. The data is only uploaded at the end of each trip when the phone is connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or cellular).

Compatible with iPhone iOS 13.0 or higher, iPod Touch and Android 8.0 or higher.

The trip route map in the app is seen only by you, the app user. No location services information is available to the people servicing a policy. Information used to evaluate driving performance is viewable to you, your Allstate agent and customer service representatives who help service your policy.

If you are a Drivewise customer and your new vehicle has been added to your policy, you can continue using Drivewise mobile since it follows you as the operator, rather than following the vehicle.

Crash Detection FAQs

Allstate offers crash detection as a free safety feature. When the app detects that you may have been in a serious crash—either as a passenger or as a driver—we'll send you a notification through the Allstate mobile app to offer help.

Crash detection technology relies on sensors in your phone to detect major collisions when the vehicle is moving at least 25 mph. It won't detect all fender-benders, being rear-ended or other low-impact accidents.

Immediately following a detected crash, we'll send a notification through the Allstate® mobile app asking you to confirm if a crash has occurred. We'll give you help options including a link to call 911. If you select to call 911, we'll prefill the number, but you'll still press call. Other help options include a link to 24-hour roadside assistance and a link to file a claim.

Troubleshooting FAQs

If Drivewise doesn't seem to be registering your trips, there are a few things you can check. Keep in mind that trips might take a moment to appear, or they may not have tracked because of a low battery or poor cellular data reception. The best first step is a good old fashioned "turn it off and back on"—close the Allstate app completely and reopen it to see if the trips have shown up.

If you're still having issues, here are some other steps to check:

First, make sure you have the most up to date version of the Allstate app.

  • iPhone: open the app store and search "Allstate" to check for an update.
  • Android: go to Google Play and search "Allstate" to check for an update.

Second, you might need to update your phone's operating system.

  • iPhone: Open the Settings app > tap on General > select Software Update.
  • Android: Open the Settings app > tap on System (or About Phone on some phones) > Advanced > select System Updates (or Software Update on some phones).

Third, make sure all the settings are correct to allow Drivewise to record trips.

  • Open and log in to the Allstate mobile app > select the Drivewise Dashboard > tap Settings > select App Diagnostics to make sure all settings are correct.

Finally, take a trip that is at least 1 minute duration and where you can reach a speed of 15 mph. This is the minimum requirement to log a trip.

Simply download the Allstate mobile app on your new mobile phone and log in using your My Account ID.

FYI: Your trip history is stored on the phone that the trip was tracked on, so the trips you've taken with your old phone won't show up in the Allstate mobile app on your new phone. You can review your trips on your old device and make any necessary adjustments (e.g., changing trips type).

Drivewise can only be activated on one device for each driver, so activating on a tablet will deactivate Drivewise on your phone. This means your phone will no longer track trips. Activating Drivewise on a tablet means you must have your tablet in your vehicle on every drive.

If you'd like to reactivate Drivewise on your phone, here's what you can do:

  • Open and log in to the Allstate app > tap the Drivewise Dashboard > select Set Up and follow the prompts.
