Detroit is one of 13 U.S. cities that is home to all four major sports – football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Four interstate highways run in and around the city – I-75, I-96, I-94 and I-275.

Detroit Car Insurance Requirements

Auto liability insurance is a type of car insurance coverage that's required by law in Michigan, so Detroit drivers must have it.

More specifically, the following liability coverages are the minimum required in Detroit:

  • $50,000 bodily injury liability limit per person1
  • $100,000 bodily injury liability limit per accident1
  • $10,000 property damage liability

Collision2, comprehensive2 and uninsured/underinsured motorist2 coverage are not required for Detroit drivers. Michigan has Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage options ranging from no coverage to continuing unlimited coverage (depending on the type of health coverage a person has, and what is best for their needs).

Additionally, Michigan requires a $1,000,000 limit on property protection, which helps cover expenses related to the damage of buildings, parked vehicles and other stationary structures, regardless of who's at fault.

All coverages are subject to the coverage limits stated in your policy.

1Existing policyholders who do not select a lower limit will default to $250,000 per person/$500,000 per accident. Policyholders who request a limit less than $250,000 per person/$500,000 per accident will be required to provide a signature certifying that they want a lower coverage limit.

2Although Michigan law does not require drivers to carry this coverage, it may be required by your lender if you are leasing or financing your vehicle.
