What can a boat policy provide coverage for?

A typical boat insurance policy may help cover a motorboat, sailboat or personal watercraft if it's stolen, in an accident or damaged by a covered peril like fire or lightning. It may also protect you if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property with your boat. Additionally, your policy may cover certain parts of the boat itself, including the machinery, hull and more. Allstate's boat insurance offers many types of coverage, from medical payments coverage and liability coverage, to property coverage and emergency services coverage.

Common types of watercrafts covered by boat insurance

There are several different types of watercraft that are covered by a boat insurance policy. The most common are:

Powerboats
Also known as motorboats, these have a capable propulsion system and can encompass anything from a runabout to a yacht.

Fishing boats
Simple to operate and maintain, these boats often include a trolling motor and are typically used for lowkey activities like fishing and observing nature.

Sailboats
Typically, this is the standard type of boat when it comes to relaxing on the water, although adrenaline junkies can also use them for racing.

Pontoon boats
These lightweight, spacious and versatile water vessels are easily customizable and include different types of pontoon boats, such as traditional pontoons, tritoons and luxury pontoons.

Personal watercraft
Fast and flexible with an inboard jet drive, these types of watercrafts are typically used by thrill seekers, and can include jet skis, WaveRunners and Sea-Doos.

How to compare boat insurance quotes

When you're gathering quotes from multiple companies to find the best boat insurance for your needs, be sure to choose the same coverages, limits and deductibles for each quote.

  • Choose your coverage

Review the types of coverage included in the standard policy, and then consider any other optional coverages you might want to add.
  • Consider your limits

Be sure to think about your personal finances when selecting a limit, which is the maximum amount the insurer will pay for a covered claim.
  • Select your deductibles

Some boat insurance coverages come with a deductible, which is the amount you'll pay out of pocket toward a claim. Remember to select the same deductible on each coverage for every boat insurance quote you request.

Types of boat insurance coverage

Here are some standard types of boat insurance coverages:

Watercraft medical payments coverage
Helps pay for some of your medical costs or funeral expenses if you, or anyone on your boat, is injured in an accident.

Uninsured watercraft coverage
Helps pay for injuries you, your family or anyone on your boat sustain due to an accident with an uninsured boater.

Watercraft liability coverage
Helps protect you from paying repair or replacement costs, medical costs, loss of income and funeral expenses of other people involved in an accident.

Property coverage
Helps pay for damage to your boat if someone hits your docked boat or if you're involved in an accident with another boat or something else, such as a pier, buoy, dock or debris.

Boat insurance coverage limits and deductibles

Most coverages in a boat insurance policy come with a deductible, and all coverages are subject to limits. When it comes to deductibles, this is the amount of money you pay out of pocket to repair or replace your boat if you have a claim covered by your policy. This means that choosing a higher deductible means you might pay less for your insurance premium now, but you could also end up paying more later if you have an accident. As for coverage limits, if you have an accident claim covered by your Allstate policy, Allstate will pay for damages up to that coverage's limits. Therefore, a higher limit means you might pay more for your insurance premium now, but it could help protect you from having to pay other people's damages later.
