Why You Should Invest in a Boating Education

While not all states require boat owners to take a boating education course, anyone who drives a boat could benefit from these classes. Beyond all of the helpful safety tips you will learn, completing the course can also earn you a discount on your boat insurance. Learn what a boating education class covers, why learning this information is important, and how you can find a class near you.

Boating Lessons

Boating education courses aren't always mandatory, but that doesn't mean you should skip the investment. Courses are offered around the country for all types of recreational boaters and for boaters of all ages. These courses are taught by organizations such as the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons and state boating agencies.

Boating education programs cover a range of topics-from safety instructions to boat handling to reading the weather-and prepare you for a variety of situations you could find yourself in while on the water.

The good news is that these courses seem to be making a difference: boating accidents are declining. According to a recent report from the United States Coast Guard, recreational boating fatalities fell to 672 in 2010-a new low-and reported accidents in general fell from 4,730 in 2009 to 4,604 in 2010.

You can find a list of organizations offering boating safety courses in the U.S. Coast Guard's Boating Safety Resource Center.

Allstate also offers a series of videos on everything from trailer preparation to boat launching to fuel safety that can give you a head start.

Protect Your Boat-And Everything On It

Even with education, accidents still happen on the water. While it may seem easy to avoid other boats on the open water, the leading causes of boating accidents are hitting submerged objects and running the boat aground. Plus, no matter how cautious you may be, you never know what other boaters will do.

To protect yourself, your family, and your boat should an accident occur, it is important to have the right boat insurance coverage:

  • Watercraft Liability helps protect you from paying medical costs, loss of income and funeral expenses for other people involved in an accident.
  • Uninsured Watercraft Liability helps pay for injuries you, your family or anyone on your boat sustains due to an accident with an uninsured boater.
  • Watercraft Medical Payments Coverage can help pay for some of your medical costs or funeral expenses if you or anyone on your boat is injured in an accident.
