Quiz: Is Your Insurance Keeping Pace With Your Life?

Published: December 2017

Did you have a big year? Buy a house? Get married? Have a baby? These and other milestones are certainly cause for celebration. But they're also some of the many life moments that should prompt you to review your insurance policies. That way you can help make sure the coverage you have fits your changing needs.

A simple check-in with your agent can help determine if you have a gap in coverage or, happily, if you're newly eligible for a discount. This quick quiz will help give you an idea of the things to think about when it comes to life changes and insurance coverage.

I'm buying a car.

Check the insurance costs of various models before you buy, because the type of car, its safety record and other factors may affect premiums (anti-theft or safety features may earn you discounts). Buying your auto and homeowners policies from the same insurer may also yield savings.

I bought a house.

Most lenders require insurance, and insurance companies determine premiums, in part, by a home's size, location and condition. But how much insurance might you need? Experts suggest a policy that covers the cost of rebuilding your home, not its market value (which may be much less).

I'm moving.

Your homeowners/renters policy typically helps protect your belongings at home, but not necessarily when they're in the care of movers. You may be protected against risks listed in your policy (things like fire or theft), but likely not moving mishaps like breakage.

I remodeled my home.

Big improvements may help increase your home's value, so you may want to increase your insurance coverage limits to account for that, or for new risks like that gorgeous new pool you just installed. Check that you have adequate coverage during renovations, too.

I got married (or divorced).

Getting married may help lower your auto premiums, and offer savings if you merge policies. But new rings need to specifically be added to a home policy to be covered. In a divorce, you'll want to uncouple policies, update ownership records and account for teen drivers in both homes.

I had a baby.

A new baby changes everything, including the number of people who depend on you. That's why a new life insurance policy, or an increase in a policy you already have in place, may help you feel more secure about your baby's future.

My teen got a license.

Adding teen drivers to your policy may increase your car insurance premiums, but it's likely less costly than buying their own coverage. Some insurers offer "good student" and other similar discounts. The type of car your teen will drive may affect premiums, too.

My child starts college.

If your student is in campus housing, their possessions may be covered under your homeowners or renters policy. Check how your insurer covers belongings away from home, though; the coverage limits may be lower. If your student is off campus, they likely need their own renters policy.

I changed jobs.

If your commuting miles are lower now, you may earn some savings on your auto insurance. Don't forget about those important 401(k) rollovers, too.

I retired.

Some insurers offer discounts on your auto policy if you're between the ages of 50 and 70. And while you may be tempted to drop your home insurance if the mortgage is paid off, it's still important to help protect your home against fire and other perils.
