I'm meeting with an agent about my car insurance. What documents do I need to bring?

When purchasing or making adjustments to car insurance, knowing exactly what information you need to provide or and what documents you may need to bring to a meeting with your agent can be confusing. But it doesn't have to be.

"I'm a firm believer in arriving prepared with the necessary documents for your meeting," says Lisa Faina, an Allstate insurance agent in Cooper City, Florida. "Preparation is key to having the most productive experience, because it helps provide your agent with the information they'll need to guide you toward the best choices for your household."

A visit to your agent will most commonly focus on new coverage or changes to your existing plan. Here are key items to consider in either situation:

Purchasing Car Insurance

When purchasing car insurance, Faina says you'll need to bring the following documents:

  • Driver's License:
    "You should bring your driver's license, as well as copies of licenses of any other individuals in your household who will be driving the vehicle(s) you hope to insure."
  • Vehicle Registration:
    "Bring the registration forms of any vehicles you're insuring, in order to demonstrate proper ownership," says Faina.
  • Current Declaration Page:
    "If you have current insurance coverage on any of the vehicles for which you're getting a quote, bring your existing insurance declaration page as proof of coverage," she says.
  • Voided Check:
    "Bringing a voided check is a good idea in case you do decide to purchase insurance at your meeting," says Faina. "Many insurers offer auto-pay or online bill pay from checking accounts, and a voided check will provide your account and routing number information for verification."

Changing Insurance Coverage

Though most changes to your coverage are relatively straightforward procedures, some do require documentation. Some examples include:

  • Adding a New Person or Vehicle:
    "Bring the driver's license, registration for any vehicles being added, and if you have an existing policy, the declaration to demonstrate compliance with required coverage," says Faina.
  • Dropping a Person:
    Though it's not necessary to do so, Faina suggests bringing proof of new insurance for the individual choosing to drop coverage, since car insurance is a legal driving requirement.
  • Cancelling a Policy:
    By the same measure, Faina recommends bringing proof of replacement coverage when you intend on cancelling a policy. "You'll typically need the declarations page, which shows the date the new coverage begins. Being that insurance is a requirement, a policy might not be cancelled unless your existing insurer knows that new coverage exists," she says. "We understand there are times when you'd like to cancel your coverage. But, we'd like to hear why you're cancelling your policy, so that we can better help you understand your options or find ways other ways to meet your needs," adds Faina.

As with many big purchases, a little preparation goes a long way when buying or making changes to your car insurance. Check with your insurance agent if in doubt about what documents you'll need for your meeting.
