No one wants to think about it, but your recreational vehicle and your belongings inside (particularly your personal items and valuables, such as the high-tech gadgets many motorhomes now have) can be stolen. There are some important insurance basics you'll need to know should theft occur.

Know your coverage

When it comes to theft, a motorhome insurance policy typically includes the following coverage options:

  • Comprehensive coverage.
This type of coverage includes non-collision damages, including theft. Comprehensive coverage typically helps protect the vehicle itself as well as interior built-in components, such as a sink or permanently installed television.
  • Personal contents coverage.
You may find that a motorhome policy offers limited coverage for belongings inside the vehicle. For instance, some policies may not offer protection if items are stolen from your motorhome, but may offer nominal coverage for your belongings if the motorhome is stolen with your belongings inside. You may be able to file a claim for additional losses under your property policy (homeowners or renters insurance, for example). Read your policy or check with your local agent to learn more about how your policy may help protect your belongings, such as clothing or portable electronics, against theft.
  • Sound system coverage.
Your policy may include coverage for a sound system permanently installed by the manufacturer, up to a specified limit. However, some insurers may not offer this coverage (or may not cover an after-market sound system), so be sure to read your policy or contact your agent if you're not sure what coverages your policy includes or to learn of any restrictions.
  • Emergency travel expense coverage.
If your motorhome is stolen, some policies may help cover the cost of your alternate transportation. It's important to remember that coverage limits (the maximum your policy will pay for a covered loss) will apply. Read your policy to brush up on your coverage limits and contact your local agent with questions or to make any adjustments.

Be prepared for the worst

Consider the old adage, "Expect the best, but prepare for the worst." Just in case you ever face the reality of your belongings being stolen from your motorhome, you may want to take some steps now.

  • Make a numbers list.
If theft occurs, you'll want to be able to file a claim with your insurance company reporting the theft of your motorhome and/or the specific belongings inside. Document your motorhome registration number, vehicle identification number, make and model as well as serial numbers of items like TVs and microwaves. You may also want to take photos to help identify your belongings.
  • Research campgrounds.
When choosing the sites where you'll be staying, look into the campground's security. Find out if it has gates, cameras and 24-hour security, suggests Kampgrounds of America. And, anytime you're away from your vehicle, make sure it's secured.

Before you hit the road, call your insurance agent or review your policy to be sure you know what's covered should theft occur. With the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have protections in place, you'll be able to enjoy the ride.
