Allstate India is all geared up for the first ever big event at their India office. The Innovation Week kick-off started with Chetan Garga, MD, talking about how important innovation is in our philosophy at Allstate.
The excitement of the event was quite evident in the gathering for the kick off.
Innovation week kick-off by Chetan Garga, MD, Allstate India.
Along with the various internal programs, the first day's highlight were two external speaker sessions.
First speaker, Bala Girisaballa.
Second speaker, Dr. A.V. Sastry.
The first session, titled "Innovation Ecosystem Overview and Ideation Process," was presented by Bala Girisaballa, Partner and Practice Head for Innovations at Zinnov Management Consulting.
Bala gave the audience a walk-through of how disruption is ruling the roost and how innovation is going hand-in-hand with a no-planned-next-move approach. The classic example Girisaballa gave is how Elon Musk from Paypal moved into the automotive industry to build the electric car with Tesla and now is moving on to disrupting the energy segment.
Bala outlined the five key principles for innovative thinking,
- Momentum vs quantity
- Data vs opinion
- Divergence before convergence
- The art, science and scaling up of an idea (in that priority)
- Disruption vs incrementalism
The second session, titled "Being an Intrapreneur," was by Dr. V. A. Sastry, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA, since 1985. Sastry is a Fellow of Computer Society of India and Fellow of IETE. He is a Life Member of the Computer Society of India (CSI).
Dr. Sastry discussed being an intrapreneur at work, in order to drive better results. In his words, intrapreneurship is about finding improved, better, faster and cheaper ways to tackle business issues. Since not everyone can be an entrepreneur, this approach can help spur micro-innovations that lead to game-changing scenarios. In today's world of continuous growth, employees must have the same mind-set as the business owner — and that's what intrapreneurship is all about.
Sastry's final thoughts to the audience were from the Brihadaenyaka Upanishad IV 4.5,
"You are what your deep, driving desire is,
As your desire is, so is your will,
As your will is, so is your deed,
As your deed is, so is your destiny."
