Immediately following a disaster

When a severe weather event happens in your area, consider the following steps:

  • First and most importantly, make sure your family is safe.
  • Do not enter your home unless you're sure it's safe. Depending on the type of disaster, there may be exposed electrical wires, standing water or a natural gas leak. If you have any concerns about the structural or environmental safety of your home, do not enter.
  • Contact the utility companies to discontinue service if your home is uninhabitable or destroyed.
  • If bills were lost or destroyed due to the damage, contact your creditors to discuss payment issues with them. Creditors usually appreciate when you're up front about what's going on.

Here are some tips to help you with the claims process.

You can start your claim online or through the Allstate® mobile app.

After filing a claim, you can use MyClaim to keep up to date with your claim. Provide or change contact information, even if it's temporary, and add payment information for quick claims transactions.

  • Take account of your loss and separate personal belongings that have been damaged from ones that are not damaged. If it is unsafe to keep any damaged personal items, try to take photos of them for your Claims team to review, then properly discard them.
  • If possible, document your loss with photos and videos.
  • If necessary, have a qualified repair service or contractor make temporary repairs to prevent additional loss. Be sure to obtain a bill or invoice for this service so you can present it to your Claims team, who will evaluate if it can reimbursed. Taking photos before these repairs may be important as well.
  • Your home may be considered uninhabitable if it is unsafe, or for example, it doesn't have running water. If the overall loss is covered, your policy may provide coverage for additional living expenses. Check your policy or speak with your Claims team to determine if you have coverage for additional living expenses. Save all receipts to document any increase in your expenses while your home is uninhabitable and be sure to give these to your Claims team, who can consider them in your claim.
  • If available, provide your Claims team with photos or video recordings that show your property or personal items before the event. This will help with the damage evaluation process.

Getting additional financial help

If you're in need of additional financial assistance, you can learn more about the availability of special loans and grants via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration, the American Red Cross, local government agencies, private lenders and philanthropic organizations.

To apply for federal disaster aid, call 1-800-462-9029 (or 1-800-462-7585 for TDD). You can also visit the FEMA website. You'll be required to provide your social security number, insurance information and information about the extent of the damage to your property. Be sure to obtain a control number that is assigned to your application.
