Tire Wear Patterns: Cracking the Code

Someone slipped me a note. It read, “Find the patchy wear, find the crook.” That might sound like gobbledygook to you. But to me it was clear as a bell. You can learn a lot from a car’s tires, you know.
I headed to the parking lot. Every tire has a story to tell, if you know what to look for. The first car had excessive wear on the inner edges of the tire. That or wear on the outer edges clue you in that something may be wrong with the wheel alignment. A visit to a mechanic is in store.
It wasn’t a match, though. The hunt was on. The next clunker had wear in the center of the tire. That may mean it’s as overinflated as my opinion of myself.
I moved on. This car’s tire had wear on the outer edges. Its owner should feel a bit low, ’cause that tire may be underinflated.
The next car had diagonal wear patterns, which may mean there’s an issue with the suspension. I hope that driver makes an appointment with a mechanic right away.
Then, there it was — the last car in the lot. It had a bad case of patchy wear. That may mean the tire’s out of balance. The driver should get a mechanic to spin and rotate his tires — once he’s out of the slammer, that is.
