How to Get Started Decorating Your Home
When you first move into a new home, it can be an exciting fresh start. All of those empty rooms may feel like a blank slate waiting for you to add your personal touch. But, what if aren’t quite sure how to make your house feel like home? If you don’t know where to begin, decorating may fall low on your priority list. But, with a few simple steps, you can be well on your way to a beautiful home.
Here’s a quick guide to getting started with decorating your home:
Step 1: Gather Inspiration
The first step in decorating is to know what you want, which requires gathering inspiration. This is the area where many people tend to struggle the most. Thankfully, finding ideas can be accomplished with just a little bit of time. Start by gathering images of rooms that you love — don’t worry if they aren’t exactly what you want in the space or if the images coordinate well with each other. It can be helpful to create a folder for each room you want to decorate — whether it’s a digital folder on your computer or tablet, or a paper folder of cut-out magazine clippings you love. You can find inspiration from blogs and magazines, or snap a photograph at your particularly-stylish friend’s house.
Step 2: Narrow it Down
Once you’ve gathered a minimum of 10 inspiration photos, you’re ready to start thinking about how these ideas apply to your home. Spend some time analyzing the photos and looking for commonalities — do all of the spaces have white walls? Do you tend to pick neutral or bright colors? Spending a bit of time poring your photos and thinking about why you like them is the key to figuring out your style. Once you’ve got that down, it can be helpful to create mood boards for each space. A board may help keep you on track while you design the rest of a room. As long as you have a general idea of the feel you want for a specific room or area, though, you should be good to go.
Step 3: Plan and Execute Your Projects
This is where things get fun. Now that you know what your style is and the general vibe you want throughout your home, it’s time to think about changes you want to make in each space and get them done. If you’re into do-it-yourself projects, create a list of a what you can tackle yourself. Or, decide which tasks to hire out if you prefer to be more hands-off or you need the help of a professional.
Once again, in this step you’ll draw from your photos and mood boards to decide what you want to do — maybe your kitchen needs a new backsplash or you want to add an accent wall to a bedroom. Choose a few things you want to try in the space and dive in. Generally, it’s best to start by choosing no more than two or three projects for a room at one time — you don’t want to overwhelm yourself. Your projects could be as simple as hanging a gallery wall or as complex as replacing flooring — the key is to strike a balance between your budget and your vision for the room, and then go for it.
Step 4: Update and Accessorize
Once the base of your room is complete, and you’ve tackled any large-scale projects, the final step to complete your room is adding the finishing touches. Use your inspiration photos and your mood board to decide if you’d like new furniture or if existing pieces will work. Then, update accessories and decor in the room to fit your vision. Swapping out things like the rug, curtains and lighting in a room can have a major impact with minimal effort — and you might be surprised at the difference something simple can make, such as new throw pillows.
By breaking down what might seem like a big, overwhelming job into a few smaller tasks, you can have a freshly decorated room that fits your style. Repeat the process until every room is your own, and then sit back and enjoy your beautiful home that’s designed exactly how you want it to be.
