Autumn Home Checklist [Infographic]

It’s that time of year again: The air is turning cooler, the leaves are starting to turn gold and orange and the days are growing shorter. Fall is in the air, and that means it’s time for apple-picking, football games — and preparing your home for cold weather.
There are a variety of home maintenance tasks you might want to perform as fall goes into full swing. Here’s a checklist of some important things to do this fall:

Tip one: Seal leaky windows and doors with spray foam, caulk or weather stripping.
Tip two: Have your roof checked once or twice a year, especially after extreme weather events.
Tip three: Have fallen leaved removed from your gutters to help prevent them from overflowing.
Tip four: Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace their batteries regularly. Consider doing this when you change your clocks for daylight savings time.
Tip five: Consider investing in a programmable thermostat to help you save energy and money.
Tip six: Keep your lawn healthy by raking leaves or mulching them with a mower about every four days.
Tip seven: Check your chimney and have it swept when you see one-eighth of an inch of sooty buildup.
Tip eight: Store dry firewood at least 15 feet away from your home. Avoid storing large amounts of wood in your home to help avoid termite infestation.
Tip nine: Before storing your lawn mower for the winter, empty it of fuel to help prevent sediment from building up.
