Living Fuller and Stronger – Promoting Healthy Aging

As we age, our minds and bodies change. That's why it's important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to embrace those changes and help prevent common age-related health problems.

Anyone can take a proactive approach to aging by incorporating healthy lifestyle habits, learning to manage existing health conditions, and staying involved in the community.

Maintaining a healthy workforce

The foundation to a successful company is its employees, and business owners should want their employees around for a long time. High turnover and absenteeism due to preventable health conditions can cost employers thousands of dollars a year.

By cultivating a health-conscious company culture, employers can help keep their employees healthy as they grow with the company. Below are some tips from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Tips to help employees stay in good health

  • Maintain a healthy diet. Dietary needs and restrictions may change as people age. Incorporate more nutritious foods into your diet that are low in cholesterol, fat, and artificial ingredients. Drinking plenty of water will also keep you hydrated. Eat nutrient dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products.
  • Exercise and get moving. Regular physical activity can help prevent, delay, and manage chronic diseases, improve balance and stamina, reduce the risk of falling, and improve brain health. Try to incorporate about 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day such as walking, and exercises that focus on strengthening the muscles twice a week. Always consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen.
  • Get routine preventive care. Preventive services are health care services like annual checkups, vaccinations, counseling, and screenings to detect and prevent illnesses and diseases. Many preventive screenings and tests are designed to catch a disease before it has a chance to start and are key to healthy aging. They can also detect risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Diagnosing a condition in its early stages and receiving treatment can help prevent even more invasive and expensive treatments in the future. Regular checkups were linked to an improved quality of life and feelings of wellness in some cases. Learn more about preventive care, What Is Preventive Care and Do Health Plans Cover the Cost?.
  • Stay sharp on brain health. As people age, their brain changes. While dementia is not a normal part of aging, anyone, at any age can start incorporating healthy habits to reduce age-related cognitive decline or manage dementia. Participating in social and mentally stimulating activities, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding nicotine are some lifestyle habits that can help. Always visit your doctor if you have questions about memory or brain health.

Are your benefit offerings aligned?

It's no secret that as we age, we become more prone to chronic conditions and our immune systems become slower to respond to impending threats. That's why a quality group health benefit plan can help keep employees healthier, for longer.

How Allstate Benefits can help

Allstate Benefits is a leading provider of employee benefits. We offer group health products for employers with 2 to 500 employees that prioritize employee wellness and access to care. The Self-Funded Program is designed so that members have access to the care they need when they need it. Below are some valuable components the program has to offer.

Preventive care benefits

Preventive care coverage in all Allstate Benefits Self-Funded plans align with Affordable Care Act requirements.

Access to care

Employers get to choose the provider network for their group's health plan. Our program offers employees access to national and local networks.

Allstate Benefits also offers reference-based pricing plans. These plans determine benefits based on a multiple of the Medicare reimbursement rate (or another derived equivalent). It doesn't use a network so members can see any provider that accepts the plan.

Comprehensive solutions

Value-added features are either included or can be added to our Self-Funded Program.

  • Telemedicine for urgent care, muscle, and joint pain treatment, and talk therapy for adults and teens.
  • Wellness programs to help keep employees healthier, while enhancing and protecting their lives.
  • Flexible family care to assist employees with caring for aging or ill loved ones, children, or themselves.
  • Support programs for unexpected diagnoses, such as cancer.
