Please note that Allstate does not currently offer pet insurance.
However, several of our agents are pet lovers just like you. Collectively, we love, live with, and care for thousands and thousands of dogs, cats, and other household pets. And we're certainly not alone: the American Pet Products Association estimates Americans will spend $50.84 billion on pets during 2011—$14.11 billion of that on pet care.
Although a handful of companies do offer a small auto insurance coverage for animals that are injured or killed in an auto accident, many policies' coverage doesn't extend to pets.
There is one area, though, where pets and insurance often intersect: dog bites are often covered as part of homeowners. At Allstate, our homeowners insurance and renters insurance policies typically cover the effects of dog bites all the way up to your liability limit.
If you're a dog owner considering homeowners or renters insurance, here's something to keep in mind: some companies specifically exclude dog bites from liability coverage-and may even exclude certain types of dogs such as Dobermans, Rottweilers, and breeds of Pit Bulls.
Although we don't offer pet insurance, we're proud to be America's largest publicly held personal lines insurer. So when we choose pet insurance for our dogs and cats, we keep these guidelines and "good to knows" in mind:
- A little homework is worth your time. Coverage levels and deductibles aren't uniform. In fact, they can vary widely. A quick search will turn up lots of companies offering pet insurance, but look beyond price to make sure you're comparing apples to apples in terms of coverage.
- Some pet insurance companies offer extras and options for things like rewards and advertising reimbursement should your companion scamper away.
- Routine office visits may not be covered by baseline policies-so make sure you understand what is and isn't covered, and read website FAQ pages.
- Some pet insurance companies increase your premium as the animal ages; some don't.
