SR-22 Insurance Information

Important note: Allstate does not provide SR-22 forms.

If you've been convicted of a DUI or failure to carry insurance - or convicted of certain other traffic violations - your state may require you to have an SR-22 (in some states it's an FR-44). These certificates of financial responsibility, in which an insurance company certifies a driver's ability to pay claims up to a particular state's required limit, are often associated with:

  • DUIs and serious and/or repeat traffic offenses
  • An at-fault accident with no insurance
  • License suspension or revocation
  • Drivers unable to show financial liability
Essentially, an SR-22 is a form submitted by your insurance carrier to prove to the state that you are maintaining auto insurance liability coverage.

SR-22 terms and requirements vary by state, but often you'll find:

  • You'll need to have an SR-22 showing continuous insurance coverage for about three years.
  • If your policy lapses or expires during this period, your insurance company is required to notify the state.
  • Failure to comply with the terms of your SR-22 may result in suspension of your license.
  • Once you properly fulfill the time requirements, your SR-22 status is lifted.
Make sure to check your state's SR-22 requirements and minimum financial responsibility requirements. After you no longer require an SR-22, call Allstate at 1-866-621-6900 for more information about all our auto insurance coverage options.
