After a Boating Accident: Safety and Insurance Procedures

A collision on the water can ruin your entire day! For some boat owners, being on the water offers a profound sense of tranquility and peace. Although boating accidents are less common than car accidents, they do happen. According to the US Coast Guard, there were 4,588 reported boating accidents in 2011, along with thousands of injuries, hundreds of deaths, and approximately $36 million in damage to property.

You can reduce your chance of getting into an accident by following Allstate's Tips to Keep Clear of Other Boats. But sometimes accidents just happen, so read on for some rules to follow if you're involved in one.

First Thing's First: Make Sure Everyone's OK

Check everyone in your boat to make sure they're safe and sound. It's a good idea to have a First-Aid kit on board. Check with the other vessel to see if anyone requires medical assistance.

If anyone needs medical attention, or a vessel is too damaged to drive back to shore, call or use your radio to contact the Coast Guard. To make sure help arrives quickly, be as specific as you can about your location, supplying latitude and longitude if possible.

Reporting the Accident to the Coast Guard

If you don't require immediate assistance, you can wait until you're back on shore to contact the Coast Guard. You'll need to file a report with the Coast Guard if anyone is injured, fatally or otherwise. Check the Coast Guard's Accident Reporting website for complete details about when to report an accident.

  • Exchange information with the other boat operator. Acquire his or her name, address, telephone number, and the boat's name and Hull ID Number.
  • Exchange insurance info, including policy numbers.
  • Collect the names and contact information for any witnesses onshore or aboard other vessels and try to gather photographic evidence.
  • Take stock of everything in your boat that was damaged or lost. Filling out the Allstate Boat Inventory Tool ahead of time will help you document your valuables.
  • Call your insurance provider and inform them of the accident. If you're an Allstate customer, we're available 24/7/365.
