2010 SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY REPORT

Other Stakeholders

Opinion Leaders and Policy Makers

Opinion leaders include experts at think tanks, academia and nonprofits, members of the media and others who study, write and speak about a range of issues important to Allstate and our customers. They influence discussion and debate, and help drive public opinion.

So Allstate listens intently to their input and ideas. And we join the discussion when our expertise and the interests of our customers, company and others is especially pertinent. Our corporate relations department shares information and communicates regularly with members of the media and other opinion makers. It helps promote national programs on teen safe driving and financial literacy for survivors of domestic abuse. Leaders and others in the company also attend forums where important issues are discussed and debated, such as The Wall Street Journal CEO Council and the Milken Institute Global Conference. In addition, Allstate has helped sponsor important events like the Aspen Ideas Festival and the Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor Poll series.

Policy makers include federal and state legislators, regulators, public officials, administrators and staff. Because we operate in a highly regulated industry, and because our business affects so many people, Allstate has an interest in laws and rules that affect insurance customers and companies.

As a company, Allstate has promoted driving safety for decades.

In addition to public information programs on teen safe driving, we’re also a major supporter of the STANDUP (Safe Teen and Novice Driver Uniform Protection) Act — Congressional legislation that would create uniform graduated driver licensing laws for all states to adopt.

In addition to these priorities, we advocate for other policy solutions at the state and federal level, including insurance regulatory modernization and a national approach to prepare and protect people from national disasters through ProtectingAmerica.org. In each case, we seek to develop positive relationships and build consensus among elected officials on key public policy matters affecting the company, our customers and society.
