How to compare RV insurance quotes
Choose your coverage
Review your options for RV coverages, then decide how you want your RV to be covered in the event of a total loss. You can also choose optional personal effects coverage and/or emergency expense coverage.Consider your limits
Be sure to think about your personal finances when selecting a limit, which is the maximum amount the insurer will pay for a covered claim.Select your deductibles
Some RV insurance coverages come with a deductible, which is the amount you'll pay out of pocket toward a claim. It's important you select the same deductible on each coverage for every RV insurance quote you request.
What types of RVs can be covered?
RV insurance can cover both types of homes-on-wheels:
Towable RVs
RVs that don’t have their own engine must be towed when moving locations. These include camper trailers, conventional travel trailers, fifth-wheel travel trailers, toy-haulers, truck campers, horse trailers with sleeping quarters.
Motorized RVs
Often called motorhomes, these self-reliant RVs do not need to be towed, are built on automotive frames and can sleep up to eight people.
Is RV insurance required/mandatory?
Nearly all states require you to have insurance for your RV/motorhome. Minimum liability requirements vary from state to state, and many require you to have protection against uninsured or underinsured drivers. Also, if you’re financing or leasing – comprehensive and collision insurance is almost always required.
Is it required for a travel trailer?
Typically, no – insurance is not required on trailers since liability coverage is typically extended to the trailer when attached to the vehicle towing it.

RV insurance FAQs
In some situations, it may not be required, but it’s still worth having. Even when your RV is not in use. insurance can help cover fire, hail, theft, vandalism, and other non-collision damages.
You also need to check your specific state’s insurance laws before removing liability coverage on your RV. While some states allow storage without any coverage, others require the owner to turn in the RV’s plates if liability coverage is removed.
Typically, yes – insurance is almost always required if you have a loan on your RV. You should check with your specific lender to see what the minimum required coverage on your RV is.
It depends. If you have comprehensive coverage on the RV and the roof is damaged by a covered peril, like a tree falling on the roof, there is coverage. But there is no coverage for general wear and tear or lack of maintenance. You may be able to purchase Roof Protection that provides coverage for wear and tear and roof malfunction.
The biggest difference between motorhome and travel trailer insurance is that motorhomes require insurance, while travel trailers are not required to have insurance, when in tow the truck which is required to have insurance, while pulling the travel trailer would extend liability insurance to the trailer, in the event of a loss.
