Report: Driving instructor sticking with it after more than four decades
Despite some close calls during his 44 years of being a driving instructor, Donald Zimmerman is hanging in there, according to the Onalaska-Holmen Courier-Life newspaper.
Once, he told the paper, a teenage student attempted to suddenly veer onto an exit ramp at 65 mph. "We were on two wheels. The three kids in the back were screaming. I got hold of the steering wheel to bring the car down on all four tires," Zimmerman told the Courier-Life. However, that sort of episode is very rare, he added.
According to the report, Zimmerman's school is the oldest one in the state that is still operated by its original owner. Now 71, the highly experienced driving teacher told the paper he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
Effective driving instructors can be invaluable to inexperienced teens, who frequently need extensive training in order to become fully competent drivers.
