Winter safe driving tip: If you hit a patch of ice, don't panic

It's important not to panic if you hit a patch of ice while driving

As the mercury continues to drop, motorists need to prepare themselves for stressful winter driving situations. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) has winter safe driving tips for keeping safe on the road.

If a patch of ice is hit, the department says motorists should gently take their foot off the gas pedal and steer in the opposite direction of the skid. Drivers with anti-lock brakes, the department says, should apply steady pressure when stopping the car. Furthermore, the DPS adds, cruise control shouldn't be used on slick roads.

The agency has additional safe driving tips for parents of teenagers. "Parents of teen drivers should make sure new motorists experience snow and ice driving in a safe environment, such as an empty parking lot," says the DPS.

Winter driving preparation should also include ensuring one is covered with the proper amounts of auto insurance. Depending on the policy type, a motorist may qualify for a rental car and other reimbursements in the event a vehicle is damaged in an accident.
