Teenage drivers could struggle to find affordable car insurance

Teens might have to spend a lot on car insurance

When insuring teenage drivers, insurance companies are likely to take a dim view of the risks some teens take on the road. Teens, therefore, can find it difficult to acquire affordable car insurance policies, according to Online Auto Insurance.

The web-based quote service compares the higher rates for teenagers' auto insurance policies to health insurance: "Just as some health insurance companies may assign higher premiums to groups of patients who have pre-existing conditions, auto insurance companies may also ask for higher rates from younger drivers, a demographic with one unavoidable but incredibly important pre-existing condition: inexperience."

Online Auto Insurance also notes that many advocacy groups are pushing for tougher licensing laws requiring more training and instruction before teens are allowed to drive on their own. The goal of such laws would be to both reduce the number of teenage drivers on the road and cut into the accident rate for those that are.

Parents of teens who are looking to move into the driver's seat should take advantage of any available supplemental classes to ensure that their young driver is as prepared as possible.
