Article: Reading Your Policy
Have Confidence in Your Coverage
It Pays to Understand Your Insurance Policy
We organize our policies to make sure everyone understands what is covered against what. It's important to understand how an event may be covered in regard to your specific structure and personal property. You may find that exploring Homeowners Insurance Basics before you read your policy can make everything easier to understand.
The Primary Areas of Coverage
The First Part Refers to the Structure of Your Residence
- This part of a Home or Manufactured Home policy refers to the entire structure, including the roof, outer walls and floors.
- This part of a Condominium policy includes what is inside the unit itself: the floors, ceilings, walls and studs. Items such as fixtures, installations and cabinets are also covered in this section.
- It does not apply to a Renters policy because no portion of the structure is covered. The landlord should be responsible for the structure.
The Second Part Refers to Any Additional Structure on the Land
- This part is only applicable to a Home Policy — and only if any additional structures exist, such as a detached garage or shed.
- It does not exist for a Condo or Renters.
The Third Part Refers to the Personal Property You Own
- This part applies to all policy types: Home, Condo, Renters and Manufactured Home
The Other Parts of Your Policy
When you read your policy, you'll also find detail on Family Liability Protection, Guest Medical Protection, Additional Living Expenses, and conditions and additional protections.
