Local Programs
California Region
Congratulations on the wonderful work you are doing in your community. This year, given the serious economic environment, The Allstate Foundation at the regional level is primarily renewing support for existing partners and accepting applications for new relationships mainly in the areas of teen driving and economic empowerment for victims of domestic violence - the two social issues we are championing.Â
As you might imagine, we get many more requests for support than we can honor with the limited resources available. Thank you for considering us and I wish you the best as you continue your valuable work in the community.
Welcome to the California Region of Allstate Insurance Company. Below are examples of our recent community efforts. Congratulations to the 2008 Agency Hands in the Community grant recipients! Below are examples of our recent community efforts.
Social responsibility initiatives in California.
What has Allstate done in our local community?
California first lady Maria Shriver launched a campaign to promote disaster preparedness among Californians. The campaign is part of her California State Alliance non-profit organization’s work. In discussing the campaign with Mrs. Shriver’s office, Allstate discovered that they had no means of distribution for the brochure “10 ways you can be disaster prepared”. Consequently, Allstate offered to print 250,000 copies and make them available in the roughly 1,300 Allstate agency offices throughout California. Collaboration on disaster preparedness work is continuing between Allstate and the California State Alliance.
The long-term relationship between Allstate and the Los Angeles Neighborhood Housing Services chapter is flourishing. With grants totaling over $1 million, work has been accomplished in the Crenshaw community in the areas of neighborhood revitalization, safety/risk management, insurance education and youth initiatives.
We support several financial education programs developed by the Sacramento Neighborhood Housing Services and the Sacramento Mutual Housing Association. These programs have helped teach community residents how to strengthen their financial situations so they may reach their goals of home ownership.
Allstate and the California Fire Safe Council produced Homeowner’s Guides to Fire Safe Landscaping to educate residents living in grassland, timberland and brushland areas on wildfire mitigation. The brochures are available throughout the state from local Fire Safe Councils.
A defensible space program in Nevada City has been supported with the aid of Allstate Foundation grants since 2000. This program provides vegetation clean up of properties owned by seniors or disabled residents who otherwise are unable to perform the clean up in this wildfire area. Several educational programs are also supported through these grants.
In 2003 and 2004, the Allstate Foundation provided grants to the San Bernardino National Forest Association to assist in the building of a portable Wildfire Education Experience Trailer. This trailer travels to public events and is a unique way to show the entire story of a wildfire; both its positive and negative impacts, how it starts, how its controlled, and its cost to the public.
Both Allstate volunteers and Allstate Foundation grants have supported the Boys & Girls Clubs of National City. With our assistance, youth and teenagers are learning to obtain economic self-reliance through the “Banking on our Future” financial literacy program. Several other California chapters of the Boys & Girls Clubs are also supported via Allstate Foundation grants in alignment with the company’s national partnership.
In partnership with Junior Achievement of Southern California, a 16-page newspaper supplement, called Money Matters, was distributed to 229,000 households and 16,000 students to engage kids and families in discussions of financial literacy.
How about local volunteerism efforts?
In 2006 agents throughout California volunteered their time to assist non-profit agencies. To support their efforts, the Allstate Foundation funded a $500 grant to each organization an agent was involved with via the Agency Hands in the Community grant program.
Each year, the Allstate Helping Hands volunteer program coordinate employees and agents throughout the State to participate in the Insurance Industry Charitable Fund’s Bridge Week event. From Chico to San Diego, Rohnert Park to Riverside, Silicon Valley to the San Fernando Valley, volunteers can be found at events preparing and serving meals at soup kitchens, rehabbing school libraries, reading to children in an L.A. skid row shelter, inspecting homes for safety, spending time with teens at a transitional housing shelter, organizing food and clothing drives, and more.
Allstate volunteers throughout the state participate in fundraising efforts to benefit organizations like the March of Dimes, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the American Foundation for AIDS Research and the American Red Cross.
Allstate volunteers in San Diego have an on-going monthly commitment to help serve lunches and visit with seniors at the San Diego Senior Community Center. With the rising cost of housing, utilities, and medication, the meals they serve help the seniors make ends meet.
Application deadline:
Applications will be accepted from January 1 – March 15 of each year.
