Winners Announced in Gift Baskets Drawing
Angie Latimer from Ingleside, IL, Mona Wimberly from Colorado Springs, CO, and Maggie Castelluccio from Chestnut Ridge, NY were randomly chosen out of the first 5,000 participants in The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program's "One Problem, Many Faces" national viral e-mail campaign to receive one of three "Many Faces" gift baskets. The prizes, provided by professional skin care company Bioelements, in partnership with The Allstate Foundation, were offered as an incentive to support The Foundation's efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence.
In late February, the Foundation’s Domestic Violence Program launched “One Problem, Many Faces,” their second national viral e-mail campaign, to encourage participants to forward a message to raise awareness of domestic violence.
By mid-April:
  • Nearly 400,000 people had opened the national viral e-mail;
  • More than 10,000 people forwarded the e-mail to a friend;
  • Nearly 9,500 people entered to win the Bioelements gift basket; and
  • More than 11,000 people visited The Allstate Foundation's page about the Program.
While you can no longer enter to win a "Many Faces" gift basket, you can still help raise awareness of domestic violence by forwarding it to your friends and family.
The national viral e-mail campaign is just one part of The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program, which focuses on providing knowledge and skills—particularly those related to financial security and economic empowerment—to support survivors of domestic violence. Since 2005, The Allstate Foundation has awarded more than $2 million to national and local domestic violence programs.
National Conference
The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program officially launched in September 2005 with a national conference in Chicago, Illinois. The second annual Economic Empowerment Conference was held on September 26–28, 2006 in Washington D.C. Hundreds of domestic violence advocates and thought leaders attended this two-day conference to learn more about the initiative and to discuss the significant barriers domestic violence survivors face in achieving economic autonomy.
Topics discussed during the 2006 conference included:
  • Economic advocacy, including how to frame the issue, critical questions to consider, and highlights of state and local service provider work;
  • Career building within traditional and non-traditional job markets;
  • Economic strategies and asset building with survivors of domestic violence;
  • Micro-enterprise, and entrepreneurial programs;
  • Personal financial management sessions;
  • Working with diverse populations; and
  • Economic justice policy issues.
Keynote speaker at the conference was Tom Wilson, President and Chief Operating Officer of Allstate Corporation.
Congressional Briefing
The Allstate Foundation and the National Network to End Domestic Violence Fund hosted a briefing during Lifetime Entertainment's Stop Violence Against Women Week 2006 in Washington , D.C. The briefing illustrated the importance of economic empowerment funding for survivors of domestic violence.
Speakers included representatives from Allstate Insurance Company and NNEDV; a survivor, who relayed her experiences and the assistance she received from one of The Allstate Foundation grants; Connie Moore of the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, who discussed the coalition's Ways to Work program; Sherri Salvione of the New York Coalition Against Domestic Violence, who presented ways her organization is supporting immigrant women; and Merni Carter of the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, who discussed Surviving in Times of Catastrophes.
When Disaster Strikes: Catastrophe Planning for Domestic Violence Advocates
The Allstate Foundation and the National Network to End Domestic Violence Fund hosted a catastrophe planning summit in Houston on April 25, 2006, that brought together nationally recognized domestic violence experts and coalition leaders to:
  • Share best practices;
  • Identify challenges;
  • Present legal advocacy issues; and
  • Assist in preparing and implementing strategies during times of natural or manmade catastrophes.
They were joined by Harris County, Texas, Judge William Eckels who presented the keynote address, and members of the Allstate Insurance Company National Catastrophe Team for a presentation on how Allstate handles initial catastrophe responses and continues critical business processes following a disaster.
Decade for Change
The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence program is partnering with the National Domestic Violence Hotline to host Decade for Change, which brings together thought leaders for a series of workshops to discuss and develop goals and strategies to help end domestic violence in the United States during the next 10 years. The Decade for Change kick-off took place on October 4, 2006 at the White House Summit.
Survivor Leadership Retreat
The Survivor Leadership Retreat held December 7–9 in San Diego, CA, brought together 25 women from across the country from a Survivors Speakers' Bureau. The Retreat focused on economic independence and cultivating personal leadership skills to help the survivors carry their message to other victims in need.
