Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Allstate’s commitment to African-American students is beyond a financial contribution. It’s an investment in the young minds that will shape the future.

We support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) through our involvement in the Southern Heritage Classic, Atlanta Football Classic and our partnership with the Tom Joyner Foundation.

• Allstate Southeast Region’s sponsorship of the Atlanta Football Classic – Tennessee State University vs. Florida A&M University.   The Atlanta Football Classic is a week-long celebration of excellence in Atlanta that culminates in a sold-out college football game. It is the largest fundraising activity by 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. The Classic is held in the Georgia Dome and has been dubbed the “Super Bowl of Black College Football” – a reference to its notoriety and attendance. The game, which evenly pits longtime rivals, Tennessee State University and Florida A&M University, against one another in a classic gridiron match, includes a pre-game Battle of the Bands as well as a full half-time showdown. Additional events include a town hall meeting on African-American health issues; a college debate; health, job and college fairs; a corporate corner; pre-game receptions; and a scholars’ parade right down Peachtree Street.  The second largest recurring college sporting event in Georgia, the Classic generates more than $30 million for Georgia’s economy each year and now has a permanent exhibit in the Georgia Dome commemorating its success.
• Allstate Southern Region’s sponsorship of the Southern Heritage Classic – Tennessee State vs. Jackson State.   Every year thousands come back to Memphis, TN for the lively tailgate parties; to cheer on historically black college rival football teams; to tee off in the celebrity golf tournament; and to experience music made in Memphis. The Southern Heritage Classic sponsored by Allstate Southern Region debuted in 1990, and the football game has grown into the largest annual single-day event in Memphis.
