A storm system that affected many other parts of the country May 11 through May 12, 2008 also resulted in widespread and scattered property damages in New Jersey. Heavy rains, high winds and lightning resulted in property losses across the state that primarily ranges in severity from minor to moderate. High winds and heavy rain lashed New Jersey chasing residents from their homes in coastal sections of Cape May County, flooding roadways and leaving thousands without power. Winds gusts reached up to 76 mph in some parts of the state. Cape May County declared a state of emergency due to flooding; the flood waters are expected to rise further this evening with more heavy rains and winds expected with the rising tide. Losses include damages to roofs and siding, damage from falling trees and tree limbs, as well as water damage resulting from rain. The counties hardest hit by this storm include Ocean, Atlantic and Monmouth. Loss reports also indicate several flooded automobiles and a handful of boat claims.
