Catastrophes in Minnesota

Midwest hit with severe storms
6/19/09 5:50 PM

Strong winds from severe thunderstorms raked parts of the Midwest June 18 and June 19, 2009, dumping heavy rain, damaging homes, and cutting off power to thousands of customers. Golf ball size hail smashed windshields and dented the bodies of cars in some areas. Hailstones also damaged roofs and skylights which in some cases resulted in interior leaks. This storm also consisted of strong winds, reportedly up to 80 mph, that downed trees and tree limbs on to homes and power lines and primarily caused damages to roofs, roofing materials, fences and decks. Damage was as caused by water entering the homes through an opening and sewer back-up. Illinois appears to the state that was the most impacted from the storm system. Most of the claims are concentrated in the Illinois counties of Cook, Rock Island and Peoria specifically the cities of Chicago, Coal Valley and Peoria. In Wisconsin, Milwaukee appears to be the city most impacted. Minnesota was minimally impacted.
