How Can I Help My Children Cope?
File a Claim or Call 1-800-54-Storm
Houses can be repaired and possessions can be replaced, but some children's fear in the aftermath of a disaster can last forever. Adults should recognize and deal with their child's anxiety. The preparation taken before a disaster strikes and the comfort offered afterwards could help relieve the trepidation a child may experience.
Preparation Tips
  • Prepare a disaster plan for your family. Ask for your child's input when choosing a safe place to go when emergency threatens and when gathering emergency supplies. Discuss with them any plan you may have for your pet's safety.
  • Together, establish a designated meeting place outside of your home in case you are separated by the effects of a disaster.
  • Assure that your child is familiar with the different sounds of a smoke detector, fire alarm and the local community warning systems.
  • Teach your child how and when to call for emergency assistance. If 9-1-1 is available in your community, be sure that even young children know how to dial it. If it’s not available in your community, keep the local police and fire department numbers posted near all the phones in your home. Be sure that your child is able to clearly communicate family information such as full name, address and phone number.
Recovery Tips
  • If you’re forced out of your home, make every effort to keep your entire family together. Children may become anxious and worry if the family is divided among relatives and friends.
  • Be open and honest, addressing their fears. Explain what has happened and what may happen next.
  • Encourage your children to tell you how they feel and ask questions.
  • Include your children in the recovery activities. Encourage their participation in cleaning up. Their accomplishments will give them a sense of pride and stability.
  • If your child doesn't return to normal after a reasonable length of time, seek counsel from a professional, such as a doctor or a mental health specialist.
