The three "C's" for safer driving
Driver care, courtesy and consideration
Do you consider yourself a pro?
Is it reflected in the way you drive? The ability to drive with care, courtesy, and consideration for pedestrians and other motorists is a sure sign of a true professional - and defensive - driver.
They're the people who know that giving a little is the best way to ensure safety. They're the drivers you won't find bulldozing their way through traffic, racing to beat a changing light or speeding through residential areas. They're the drivers who resist temptation and stay courteous even when other drivers are trying to get a jump on them.
They do it by:
Staying away from any-me first-situations. They yield the right-of-way and give a little ground, knowing that trying to squeeze two or more objects into the same space simply won't work. Many drivers have tried and lost.
Showing respect for others, as well as yourself. Being self-centered and aggressive behind the wheel is asking for trouble.
Developing a courteous attitude. They obey traffic rules, yield the right-of-way, signal their intentions and drive a safe vehicle, all in the name of courtesy to other motorists.
In every situation, the right-of-way is something that is to be given, not taken. If the other driver isn't following the rules, let them have the right-of-way, even if it really belongs to you. Anything else is gambling with the lives of your passengers and yourself.
Here are a couple other tactics you might consider:
Signal your intentions when making a turn or changing lanes. Make the other drivers aware of what you plan to do.
Keep your vehicle in top condition. Follow recommended maintenance procedures, check tires frequently and keep your vehicle clean.
