Allstate Boat Safety Checklist

When You're Out On the Water:

  • Always keep track of where you are—and where you're going.
  • Keep an eye on the weather, and give yourself enough time to get to safety if things change dramatically.
  • Watch the horizon to look out for other boats. You're not the only one out on the water.
  • Learn the federal and state regulations—and follow them.
  • Pay attention to safety indicators, such as waterway markers.
  • If you're driving a jet ski, remember that you might be less visible to other boaters.

Safe Boating in Rough Weather

You're out on the water and a storm rolls in. Do you know what to do?

  • Everyone on-board should put on their PFDs and sit in bottom of the boat near the centerline.
  • Slow down, but don't stop completely.
  • Keep the bilge pumps running.
  • Turn on the boat's running lights.
  • Point the boat's bow into the waves at a 45-degree angle.
  • If there's a safe shore nearby, head for it.
  • If the engine dies, trail the anchor from the bow so the boat will keep heading into the waves.
  • If things are getting especially hectic, anchor the boat.

Before You Raise Anchor

Heading for open waters? A few quick tips will help you enjoy smooth sailing.

  • Give your boat a full check-up before you cast off. Test the radio, lights, steering, gauges, fuel level, bilge pump, and anchor.
  • Make sure you've got the right safety equipment on board. Also, check that it's in good shape, and that you know how to use it.
  • Make sure a relative or friend has your float plan.
  • Get familiar with its controls and how it handles, so you won't be surprised when you're out.
  • Check the weather forecast.
  • Make sure you have enough PFDs for all your passengers, and check that they fit properly.

We'll be there when the seas get stormy.
