The state of West Virginia encompasses 24,230 square miles and is ranked 41st in the nation's total area. It was the 35th state to enter the union on June 20, 1863. West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the American Civil War, and retained part of the original name.

- Nearly 75% of West Virginia is covered by forests.
- The first rural free mail delivery was started in Charles Town on October 6, 1896, and then spread throughout the United States.
