Little Bit of History

The state of Utah encompasses 84,889 square miles and is ranked 13th in the nation's total area. It was the 45th state to enter the union on January 4, 1896. The name Utah is derived from the Ute Indian language, meaning people of the mountains.

  • Beaver is the birthplace of two very famous individuals, Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of television and Butch Cassidy, the notorious western outlaw.
  • Kanab is known as Utah's Little Hollywood because of the large number of motion pictures that are filmed in the area.
  • Completion of the world's first transcontinental railroad was celebrated at Promontory where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads met on May 10, 1869.
  • The Heber Valley Railroad's magnificent steam engine and ten passenger railroad cars have been filmed in over 31 motion pictures over the past 20 years.
