The state of Ohio encompasses 44,825 square miles and is ranked 34th in the nation's total area. It was the 17th state to enter the union on March 1, 1803. Ohio is derived from the Seneca word ohi:yo', meaning beautiful river (French mistranslation) or large creek, which was originally the name of both the Ohio River and Allegheny River.
- Akron is the rubber capital of the world.
- Cleveland became the world's first city to be lighted electrically in 1879.
- John Lambert of Ohio City made America's first automobile in 1891.
- Ohio gave America its first hot dog in 1900. Harry M. Stevens created the popular dining dog.
