The state of Nebraska encompasses 77,421 square miles and is ranked 16th in the nation's total area. It was the 37th state to enter the union on March 1, 1867. Nebraska gets its name from a Chiwere (Sioux) word meaning flat water, after the Platte River that flows through the state.
