The state of Mississippi encompasses 48,434 square miles and is ranked 32nd in the nation's total area. It was the 20th state to enter the union on December 10, 1817. Mississippi derived its name from the Mississippi River, which in turn was named after the Ojibwe word misi-ziibi meaning Great River.
