The state of Alabama encompasses 52,419 square miles and is ranked 30th in the nation's total area. It was the 22nd state to enter the union on December 14, 1819. Alabama's name is believed to have originated from the Choctaw language Albaamaha, and was later adopted by the Alabama tribe as their name.

- In 1902 Dr. Luther Leonidas Hill performed the first open heart surgery in the Western Hemisphere by suturing a stab wound in a young boy's heart. The surgery occurred in Montgomery.
