Engineers make IT happen
'Engineers Make It Happen' is a pilot programme to help school and Further Education engineering students gain a better understanding of engineering careers, and the opportunities they bring.
Patricia Wilson, Team Manager at Allstate Northern Ireland brings a wealth of experience to the programme having worked from Bangalore to New York, Stockholm to Madrid using her software engineering skills to delve into manufacturing, finance, medical, government and telecommunication.

Gareth McAleese, an Information Security Engineer at Allstate Northern Ireland has a background in ancient languages, having two Masters degrees in Egyptian, Greek and Latin from Cambridge. Last year he completed a third Masters in Computer Science (by getting a computer to read English poetry): unorthodox backgrounds and thinking can be a distinct advantage in programming! His work now involves finding ways to automate the processing of security requests.

Andrew Jenkins has spent 15 years working in the IT industry however when he started a Business Studies degree at the University of Ulster, a career in information technology was not in his plans. A high demand for IT graduates saw Andrew complete an MSc in Computers and Information Systems and start work immediately with a global telecommunications company. Andrew has had a varied and interesting career; from training engineers in Mexico and presenting at software seminars in Dublin, to architecting cutting-edge insurance applications and developing systems to support thousands of US-based employees.
Andrew, Gareth and Patricia have visited many schools in Northern Ireland encouraging young people to enter a career in IT, who knows they could be inspiring the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.
