On Wednesday 16th December, Allstate Northern Ireland invited representatives from Camara to receive hardware donations. Camara is Ireland's largest computer re-user, sending over 14,000 PCs to Africa to aid education in schools. Over 250,000 computers are disposed of in Ireland every year. However, re-use is better than recycling as a solution. A comprehensive UN study reveals that, re-using a computer, 'is some 20 times more effective at saving life cycle energy use than recycling'. (United Nations University Study 2004)
Ann Fitzpatrick, Project Coordinator in the Camara workshop in Belfast said "Camara re-use computers from businesses and consumers to enhance educational opportunities for children in schools in Africa. Africa needs 300 million PCs to bring it to the same number of computers per capita as South Africa. Since it was set up in 2005, in Dublin and 2007 in Belfast, Camara has refurbished & shipped 14,000 computers to Africa. We have established computer labs in over 276 schools and we have just completed the third year of our IT teacher training programme in 7 countries in Africa. It makes perfect sense to give your used computer to Camara in order to extend its life through reuse in an African school."
